Do You Have a Battery to Recondition?

Why Do Batteries Lose Their Charge?

Most batteries becoming unusable after a period of use for a reason, namely due to a process known as sulphation. Sulphation is the buildup of deposits on the lead plates that are found inside a battery. As this buildup progresses, it causes the battery to start losing its capacity to take and hold a charge, until it reaches a point where the battery is seen as dead.

A battery can however be reconditioned by removing these deposits from the lead plates. One way to do this is by adding an additive to the battery’s electrolyte, which will in turn help remove the deposits.

You may think that reconditioning a battery is a waste of time when you can simply hook the battery to a battery charger. A battery charger will however only charge a battery to the capacity the battery is able to handle in its current state. If there is a substantial deposit on the plates, the battery won’t be able to accept a charge.

Charging a battery doesn’t remove the deposits that have built up due to the sulphation process. Once a battery has been reconditioned, it can be recharged back to its full capacity again.
There are a number of ways in which a battery can be reconditioned and some people are able to do this with tools they already have in their toolkit. There are also a number of other tools that can be bought to streamline the process even more. Many individuals have made it their profession to recondition batteries and have turned it into a successful business.

Some specialized tools like rechargers or similar devices have been designed to recondition batteries. Another method commonly used is to pre-condition the battery by putting it in a refrigerator before moving to the reconditioning stage with a tool like a recharger. This may help to make the breaking up of the deposits easier.

Nickel Cadmium batteries such as those often used in household devices can even be reconditioned. A common technique used is to cycle those batteries by charging them fully and then discharging them completely, repeating this cycle three times. In many cases, this will bring them back to their full capacity. We discuss many tricks of the trade like this in the course.

It is always a good idea to check your car’s battery occasionally to make sure it remains in good condition. You do need to be careful when handling car batteries. For your safety, be very careful with all aspects of handling them. Protective gear should always be worn when working on them.

If you are able to recycle batteries by reconditioning them, you will be able to save a substantial amount of money by being able to use your batteries much longer. By reducing the amount of waste from going into landfills in the form of batteries, you will also be helping the environment.
