Do You Have a Battery to Recondition?

Learn How to Recondition Batteries

There are various methods that can be used to recondition batteries. This is a great way to not only save money, but you will also be doing your share to protect the environment. By reconditioning batteries, you will be able to reuse your car battery, cell phone batteries, as well as batteries used in other devices.

Once you have learnt how to recondition batteries, you will be able to help people by making their batteries last longer, and earn good money from doing so. To do this, you will simply need to follow various specific steps, but before we explain those, you need to understand what it actually means to recondition a battery. At first glance, it may seem that recharging and reconditioning a battery is the same thing. This is actually not the case.

Recharging a battery means that you add a charge to it so that it can be used again for a certain amount of time. As the battery gets older and gets recharged repeatedly, its capacity tends to reduce over time, meaning that you will have to charge them more often, while the charge also lasts for less time.

When you recondition a battery however, the full capability of the battery tends to be restored, allowing them to be used like new batteries again. Batteries can be reconditioned either with the help of companies offering battery reconditioning service, or by doing it yourself. Before you can recondition a battery, you need to determine what type of battery needs recondition.

There are various types of batteries that can be reconditioned, including Lithium, Alkaline, Oxyride, NiCad, Rechargeable Alkaline, NiMH and Heavy Duty. Different types of batteries have different methods that need to be used to recondition them. You will also need different materials and some equipment before you can start reconditioning batteries and these need to be gathered before you start with the process.

A well ventilated room or area should always be used for the whole process and you need to ensure that you take the required safety precautions before you begin.

Remember that both the batteries and the materials needed for reconditioning batteries can be dangerous and to prevent the possibility of injury, you need to take proper precautions. Some of the equipment and materials that you will need are the old battery that you want to recondition, a 12 volt battery charger, and a battery tester or digital multi-meter. You will also need personal protective equipment (PPE), such as gloves and safety goggles.

It is also always best to wear a full sleeved shirt while doing the job. If you are unsure about the process, rather first seek help from a professional, or even from a family member, friend or colleague who knows how to reconditioning batteries and understands the requirements.

Before you start the reconditioning process, make sure that the type of battery you want to recondition is in fact susceptible to reconditioning. Never rush while you are reconditioning the battery, but make sure you do every step correctly. You might know that a battery has a lead surface that gets coated over time and that this coat tends to reduce the battery’s capacity.
